Len announced a change this year for Seniors.
Hello to the Brimley group!
Yesterday we had a great day of golf in Minnesota — in Feb!!! Was a bit breezy to start but then the wind calmed down for most of the round. Hirschey and Jeff (2.0) wore shorts — of course! The course was in good shape – for Feb, but the greens were very sandy – difficult to read / putt. But who cares – it’s Feb golf! That was the motto of the day.
It was walking only and some cart paths (not the asphalt paths) were muddy so we had to stay on the high ground. Walking between holes, 2.0 had slipped and fell on his driver (snapped the shaft). Jeff was ok other than his pride :-). Was unfortunate because he was hitting his driver well before it broke.
All in all, had a few birdies, a few bogeys, lots of pars AND tons of fun! Can’t wait to see everyone in August.
Cheers,
Mike

We’re 1 month away from our 8/11 tee time on Friday! Time to get those clubs cleaned, stock up on your balls, grab a new golf glove, and make sure you have plenty of toilet paper in your bag for emergencies (you know who you are)!
Super excited to see everyone, been waiting for this all year. Some quick final updates:

“Great weather, golf ,good food and great friends. What else could you want?”, Len Wilkie
Seriously, he wasn’t kidding. PERFECT weather for golf. Food was great at Pickles – top notch service and a few people came home with some extra cash from the casino. All in all great weekend — Minnesota crew is happy to catch up on some much needed sleep this week!
Mike Thompson and Bill Todd tied for 1st with scores of 254. Mike won the Len Wilkie Classic Trophy and Bill won the Senior Trophy.
The Blue Team defeated the Gray Team by 70 pts (692 to 622) GO BLUE!
Daily Summary:
Mike Martin Jr started off the tournament with a score of 80 for a short lead. Not too far behind was Mike T (81), new guy Theo J (82), Andrew T (83), Eric B (84), Chad B (welcome back Chad!), new guy Brad P, Mark M (85), and Bill T (88)
Day 2 proved to be much tougher for the group, however, a few still broke 90 – Bill T and Eric B (84), Chad B (85), Andrew T and Brad P (86), Theo J and Aaron S (87).
Through Day 2, our leader was Eric B with a score of 168. Andrew T and Theo J were tied for 2nd and Mike M and Brad P were tied for 4th.
Only 3 golfers broke 90 on Sunday — the turning point of the tournament. Mike T and Bill T (82), Chad B (89).
Check back in a few days for photos from this weekend. Thanks Lenny for hosting and organizing. Very well done as usual! Can’t wait till next year…
Cheers,
Mike Jr
Brimley golfers,
I subscribe to blog posts from the GM of one of my local golf courses. I find his take on golf laid back and traditional (for the most part). I enjoy his love of history of the game and passion to make it a great experience for all. He has a unique perspective on golf after 30+ years of running an elite golf course. He’s been known to ask people to leave the course for playing slow — and invite those same people up to his ‘office in the attic’ for a whiskey. My neighbor Theo introduced me to Tom Abts when we had a rain delay on a Saturday morning round earlier this spring. ‘Tommy’ invited us up to his ‘office in the attic’ and brought out the Chicken Cock Bourbon and poured 4 glasses. We sipped whiskey and listened to Tommy talk about the history of golf and how the Shepherd in Scotland would bet a sip of their buddy’s whiskey that he could hit his rock up to the top of the hill in fewer shots than his buddy could. Keeping golf simple – hit it, find it, hit it again. He has a way of taking stress off the game of golf – or was that the whiskey?? lol.
I read a blog post of Tommy’s today that I want to share with you guys. It was an email, so I’ve copied and pasted the contents below – hopefully Tommy wouldn’t get mad. It touches on tradition of golf and trying to find ways to weave in modernization of the game.
Next time I have a sip of whiskey with Tommy, I’ll let him know I shared his email with an awesome group of golfers … hope you enjoy the read as much as I did.
Note: If you haven’t seen the movie “The Greatest Game Ever Played“, I highly recommend it… Story of Francis Ouimet, caddy winning the 1913 US Open Championship.
| Greetings Golfers, This week the US Open is at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. That’s its real name “The Country Club”. It was the first country club in America … just outside of Boston. Of course it’s full of history and tradition. It’s biggest moment was classic American … the caddy – Francis Ouimet … beating the legendary Pro – Harry Vardon … to win the 1913 US Open. The poor kid … the caddy … beating the best in the world at the ultimate old-school, elite country club. A great moment for golf … and for America. Society is always struggling with the need for Tradition and the need for Progress. Just because something is old … doesn’t mean it is not good. Newer doesn’t mean better. And just because something is new … doesn’t mean it’s not good. Old doesn’t mean better. Better is better. Progress does not mean revolution. If we’re always starting over … we have nothing to build on … we can never progress. But never trying new ways is just being stuck.I’m glad that golf has progressed. I love the new clubs and balls … golf course maintenance has greatly improved … I love golf carts. But … I wish that at the Tour level, golf hadn’t “progressed”. I’d like to see these guys play venues like The Country Club with the same clubs and balls that Hogan and Nicklaus used … and have the course set-up the same way. Here’s why … right up the road from The Country Club in Boston is Fenway Park. Fenway is basically the same ball-park that Ted Williams used to play. The reason why is because Major League Baseball still use wooden bats and the same ball (some years).Imagine if MLB used metal soft-ball bats. Fenway Park would become obsolete and none of the records would mean anything. We can still compare apples-to-apples.I wish the PGA Tour could do it … or at least at Majors such as the US Open. Obviously our society is battling along the Traditional vs Modern lines. And there should always be tension between the two … tension can be healthy. But war is not healthy. Everybody loses. There needs to be respect between both sides. What I’m seeing is arrogance – not respect. It ain’t pretty. Maybe golf can set the example America needs. It can be Modern/Progressive …And it can be Traditional …They have to respect each other. Not always as a merger … but letting each side do it their way. Throwing both sides into a blender isn’t a good solution … unless you like mush. Diversity is healthy … uniformity is not. I want to listen to straight-forward people … whether they be Modern or Traditional. But not duplicitous. My dictionary defines duplicitous as “someone who intentionally misleads”. The other morning I listened to a player (you know who) at a press conference who tried to be Modern and Traditional … and play both sides on every issue. He was duplicitous. The US Open should be Traditional. It’s the nature of the beast. But if an untraditional player should win – a modern Francis Ouimet – wouldn’t that be great! Hey everyone – the groups for Friday have been released. 56 days until Munoscong.
If you have any proposed changes, shoot Len an email and let him know. Depending on how many wishes you have left, it may or may not be granted. 🤣
I have already set up the cart partners as best ball teams in the scoring software. When you’re done with your round, hand your scorecards to me – I’ll get everything loaded. Make sure your damn scores are legible 😡. Review how to keep score here.
Post any questions in the comments or shoot me an email or text.
Cheers,
MM

This year, we will have optional skins and placement games each day to add a little more competition and camaraderie. We all play better with money on the line, right??
For those that want in on the games, the cost is $10 per person per game. Again, completely optional. If you don’t pay, you don’t have a chance to win. Check out our scoring format for more information.
Placements ($10 pp per day) – 2 person best ball (low score – cart partners). We will payout 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 10th (depending on how many teams sign up). Each cart partner has to be in. Each day is reset and starts over. Payouts are equal for each placement.
Skins ($10 pp per day) – standard skins pot / # of skins = payout per skin. If the pot is $200 and there are 4 skins for the round, each skin is worth $50 each.
Hand your scorecards in as normal and your scores will be entered into the software. The software automatically calculates out skins and team scores.
Reach out to Mike Martin Jr for any questions.
Reminder – in order to keep your spot, remember to get your payments in to Len – you are now past due!
